Probability & Computers Challenge

We are using computers and AI more and more in our everyday lives. So, have you ever wondered how truly random a computer can be in picking something? This homeschool programming Challenge will test probability. You will compare results from a computer in comparison to the old-fashioned method. In this homeschool programming Challenge, Trainees will program simple dice code, and then using the Scientific Method they will test their hypothesis as to whether computers are truly random or not. The result may surprise us in many ways!

All our homeschool STEM Challenges are created in such a way that Trainees of any age can use them. Our test Trainee group ranges in age from 7 years old to 14 years old. However, we have had 5-year-olds successfully complete Challenges with assistance and even a few parents joined their Trainees to learn to code! We recommend simplifying the task for younger Trainees and helping them with the Challenge Kits. For older students, we recommend that they go more in-depth and that their finished solution is of a higher standard and more detailed. We have also taken into consideration different learning styles. So the Portfolio and Lessons can be adapted to each Trainee’s needs. Ultimately, our program is about working through the process. And you are never too young or too old to learn that skill.

For this Challenge, Trainees over 8 years old should be able to complete it with minimal assistance. Younger Trainees will require assistance.

Unfortunately, due to a worldwide shortage in micro:bits we are currently unable to offer them in our kits. You can still complete the Challenge by using the simulator and we have added a bonus Scratch coding lesson.
