Conductivity Device Challenge

$74.95

Circuitry is in everything around us. This Challenge will explore the basic concepts of Circuits with a creative twist. Wearable technology is a growing industry, with a particular focus on health diagnostic devices. This simple Challenge can open the door to inspiration that has endless possibilities.

Trainees will be challenged to design and make a creative circuitry art piece. Firstly, we will learn the basic principles of how a circuit is made. They will then create the S.T.A.N. Robot Kit. Then using the STEM Training Process create their own electrified art piece!

Thomas Edison is our STEM Hero, a fellow home-educated student, who became one of the greatest innovators to live. They will work through the STEM Training Process to create their circuit art by Planning what they will make, Making it, Tinkering with it, Reflecting on it, Sharing their finished project, and then finally Improving it.

They will be able to use their Trainee Portfolio to work through the Challenge and record their work.

All our Challenges are created in such a way that Trainees of any age can use them. Our test Trainee group ranges in age from 7 years old to 14 years old. However, we have had 5-year-olds successfully complete Challenges with assistance and even a few parents joined their Trainees to learn to code! We recommend simplifying the task for younger Trainees and helping them with the Challenge Kits. For older students, we recommend that they go more in-depth and that their finished solution is of a higher standard and more detailed. We have also taken into consideration different learning styles. So the Portfolio and Lessons can be adapted to each Trainee’s needs. Ultimately, our program is about working through the process. And you are never too young or too old to learn that skill.

For this Challenge, Trainees over 10 years old should be able to complete it with minimal assistance. Younger Trainees will require assistance.

Conductivity is the property of a substance to allow it to conduct electricity. Learning to distinguish between conductors and insulators can be a fascinating study that can have endless applications in other areas.

In this Challenge, Trainees will work through the Engineering Design Process to develop a device that can test conductivity. They will work through Challenge Kits* that will help them understand the basic concepts of a circuit and how to conduct an experiment using the Scientific Method.

They will find our STEM Hero an interesting, unknown pioneer in the field!

They will be able to use their Trainee Portfolio to work through the Challenge and record their work.
