Ketchup is one of the most popular condiments. But have you ever wondered how it is made? This challenge will use your imagination, curiosity, and creativity to take your ketchup all the way back from the bottle to how it starts, as a seed.

All our Challenges are created in such a way that Trainees of any age can use them. Our test Trainee group ranges in age from 7 years old to 14 years old. However, we have had 5-year-olds successfully complete Challenges with assistance, and even a few parents joined their Trainees to learn to code! We recommend simplifying the task for younger Trainees and helping them with the Challenge Kits. For older students, we recommend that they go more in-depth and that their finished solution is of a higher standard and more detailed. We have also taken into consideration different learning styles. So the Portfolio and Lessons can be adapted to each Trainee’s needs. Ultimately, our program is about working through the process. And you are never too young or too old to learn that skill.

For this Challenge, Trainees over 10 years old should be able to complete it without assistance. Younger Trainees will require assistance as this will involve making a recipe.

In this Challenge, students will explore how one of the most loved snack items is made and then, using the Engineering Design Process develop their own chocolate bar and branding for it. We are combining all the aspects of STEM to help students not just develop their skills in fun ways but give them insight into a familiar product.

The chocolate bar industry is an $18 billion industry, with the average American eating three chocolate bars a week. Consumers love variety and new exciting chocolate bars to try. This challenge will use a student’s imagination and creativity to see if they can become a chocolatier.

In this Challenge, we are taking STEM to a new level by adding Art and making this a STEAM project. With advancements in technology, accessibility has made it possible to create art in a STEM manner.

Trainees will explore basic circuitry concepts and then, using the Engineering Design Process, design and create greeting cards that light up. They will create simple and parallel circuits using conductive tape and LEDs to add a stunning effect to a simple card. Not only will this increase their STEM knowledge of circuitry, but it will open up concrete learning by activating their creativity.

They will study our STEM Hero, Nikola Tesla, and his contribution to electricity.

The Challenge kits come with all supplies needed to create three greeting cards that demonstrate the different concepts. They will then have the supplies to design and create their own card.

As always, at the end of the Challenge, Trainees will take their journey and create a 5-minute presentation.

With so much talk about renewable energy, STAN suggested that we investigate one form of energy, wind power.

In this Challenge, Trainees will research wind power using the Engineering Design Process. Our STEM Hero for this Challenge is the William Kamkwamba.

Trainees will explore mathematics with pinwheels and also harness the wind with a wind-powered lift.

Once their research is complete, they will take their knowledge and use their imagination to think about a way that wind power could be used.

As always, at the end of the Challenge, Trainees will take their journey and create a 5-minute presentation.

STAN has identified a problem that occurs in a lot of homes. So we decided to challenge our Trainees to solve this problem using the catapult concept. Innovation is taking something that already exists and imagining a new way to use it.

In this Challenge, Trainees will research simple machine levers and catapults using the Engineering Design Process. Our STEM Hero for this Challenge is the great Leonardo Da Vinci.

Trainees will build two catapult-inspired models as part of their research.

Once their research is complete, they will take their knowledge and use their imagination to design a device that will solve the problem that STAN has discovered.

As always, at the end of the Challenge, Trainees will take their journey and create a 5-minute presentation.

For centuries bridges have helped society to connect over terrain and waterways. Their ascetic appeal has also made them essential landmarks and tourist attractions and the subject of art and photography. We use bridges so much that we are probably unaware of all those we use daily.

In this Challenge, Trainees will research bridge construction, engineering, and design. Our STEM Hero for this Challenge is the Brooklyn Bridge or the family that overcame numerous obstacles to ensure the bridge’s vision was complete. The Brooklyn Bridge was a triumph of engineering when technology was limited.

Trainees will also build models of some of the most common bridges. Once their research is complete, they will take their knowledge and use their imaginations to dream of what a future bridge might be. As always, at the end of the Challenge, Trainees will take their journey and create a 5-minute presentation.

Learning about the States Of Matter is a fundamental scientific concept. In this Challenge, we will explore the three states, how change occurs between the states, and then conduct fun experiments. Finally, we apply the scientific concepts to the real-world application of blowing up a balloon!

We will work through the Scientific Method and learn how to document, analyze, and conclude your findings. In addition, we added a bonus on how to put the Challenge together as a STEM or Science Fair Project.

Our STEM Hero for this Challenge is called the Founder of Modern Chemistry!

They will be able to use their Trainee Portfolio to work through the Challenge and record their work.

*Challenge Kits will be shipped to you. However, you will need to provide vinegar and water in this Challenge. The nature of liquids makes them hard to ship. Additional suggested resources are available in the Supplies List Lecture.

We create all our Challenges so that Trainees of any age can use them. Our test Trainee group ranges in age from 7 to 14 years old. Conservation has become an increasingly important subject as we have become more conscious of our responsibility as good stewards of God’s planet. For example, butterflies are pollinators and play a role in our planet’s ecosystem.
We know that we are changing natural habitats, which is sometimes required. For example, while providing a cleaner, renewable source of electricity, solar energy farms need large sections of land to be cleared of vegetation to install them. These trade-offs, while on the one hand are helping us be better stewards, also leave a negative impact.
However, we can do our part to improve the world for species like butterflies. Even if we live in an apartment, we can plant a container garden that has a thoughtful plant selection. We can reduce the use of pesticides in our yards. We can also campaign to our counties to ask them to plant wildflowers in road mediums.
In this Challenge, Trainees will work through the Engineering Design Process to design a butterfly garden for their home. In addition, they will work through Challenge Kits* to help them understand the basic concepts of the perfect ecosystem for a butterfly.
They will find our STEM Hero an inspiration source as the first Landscape Architect and how his designs are still enjoyed a century later!
They will be able to use their Trainee Portfolio to work through the Challenge and record their work.
We designed all our Challenges so any age group can use them. Our test Trainee group ranges in age from 7 to 14 years old.
